There are no atheists in foxholes. It’s a phrase used to express the phenomena of the foxhole conversion. Facing the existential threats of the battlefield, soldiers, some of whom did not previously believe in a higher power, find themselves praying they'll make it out alive. Climate change is the existential threat faced by humanity. Unlike the battlefield, you don’t have to be in the line of fire to know it’s coming for you. 

 

For those of us who love winter sports and love to be out in the elements, there is no denying that those elements have changed. Regardless of our politics, there are no climate deniers on the slopes, the snowy trails, or the frozen ponds. We all know that climate change is real. It's just a matter of whether we are concerned enough to do something to end it, or if we prefer to do nothing and take our chances. So deniers? No. We know winter. We’ve seen the change with our own eyes. On the slopes, there are no deniers. 

 

CARPE NIX was founded in the summer of 2023, the hottest on record, to advocate for action, raise awareness about climate change, and build a community of winter adventurers, all dedicated to ensuring our slopes and trails will be covered in snow, our ponds and backyard rinks in ice for years to come. We are not just working to save our favorite winter pastimes. Our work is saving the planet.
